Spotlight on Bowen as John Responds to Fascia NewspaperArticle

AN article in The Guardian newspaper ‘The Fascia Secret…’ prompted a response from Bowen therapist and instructor John Wilks.

His letter appeared online a few days later, one of several offering further insight into the importance of this network of connective tissue that plays such a significant role in Bowen therapy.

The original article posed the question ‘how does fascia affect your health’ and quoted a musculoskeletal physiotherapist and a functional movement specialist, both of whom highlighted the benefits of movement (Guardian graphic) and exercise.

John’s response put the spotlight on manual therapies such as Bowen Technique, referring to a growing body of international research supporting the importance of working with fascia to ensure optimum body health.

Here is an extract from his letter, which can be read in full on The Guardian website

‘Manual therapists have long recognised the importance of working with fascia. Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy, stressed its significance and newer approaches such as the Bowen Technique aim to improve hydration, proprioception and flexibility by engaging fascia gently and directly.

‘One of the least appreciated aspects of fascia is its extraordinary sensitivity; it provides a constant feedback loop to the central and autonomic nervous systems, responding continuously to internal and external stimuli.

‘Often it is these gentler methods such as Bowen, Feldenkrais or slower forms of yoga that have the greatest influence on this remarkable network which underpins the healthy functioning of the whole body.’
