BACK problems first opened the door to the benefits of Bowen for Angela Herdman (pictured far right), our newest instructor and thought to be one of the most experienced Bowen therapists in Scotland.

Raising four children while trying to manage ongoing back pain, together with a variety of other health issues, was a challenge until Bowen came to the rescue.

She told us: “After experiencing significant improvement in two longstanding health conditions, I felt instinctively that I wanted to learn more and become a therapist myself, to help others. I signed up to the very first training course in Edinburgh in 2004 and from the first day I knew this was meant to be.”

From the outset, Angela was guided not only by her own belief in the therapy but by her sister Jacqui Hoitingh, herself a respected BTUK therapist and instructor. “We have always been close, and Jacqui has been a constant inspiration and a positive influence throughout my Bowen journey,” she said.

The sisters also share an interest in spiritual matters and Angela has been told she has ‘warm or healing hands’ through which she channels her Bowen Technique skills both in her Kelso clinic and when teaching students.

For the past ten years, Angela has accompanied her sister on a variety of Bowen courses to deepen her knowledge, refine her skills and immerse herself fully in founder Tom Bowen’s philosophy. This long ‘apprenticeship’ has given her a solid basis from which to develop the next phase of her Bowen career as an instructor, offering the same clear, calm and supportive environment helping students build their own confidence and trust in the work, and in themselves.
