From nursing to Bowen Therapy… loving my new career!
Case Study: Catherine Instone
REGISTERED nurse Catherine Instone starts the new year having given up her role with a GP practice to focus on Bowen. Many of our students have similarly chosen to leave their job after qualifying to follow a more rewarding career path.
For almost 30 years, her varied nursing career included working in elderly care, a period as a specialist radiology nurse and latterly in community/primary care which included supporting patients at home as well as within her local GP surgery.
She became aware of Bowen after injuring her back around eight years ago and recalls that time as searching in vain for relief. As she explains: “I went to my GP who prescribed painkillers and spent a lot of money on different therapies, none of which led to any noticeable improvement.
Thankfully I found Bowen which resolved my problem within three – four sessions and I now continue with regular ‘maintenance’ Bowen treatment.”
It was Catherine’s Bowen therapist who encouraged her to train, and she subsequently signed up with our instructor Nickatie Morgan to attend an introductory day. “I knew immediately that Bowen was for me and decided to go part-time as a nurse while building up a Bowen client base.”
So, how does her new slower lifestyle compare to previous? “I love being my own boss, able to schedule appointments that suit the client and myself rather than being constrained to a pre-set working day,” she said. “Most of all I love Bowen as a gentle effective complementary therapy helping people both with physical and emotional issues without having to resort to a doctor’s prescription! (Ed’s note: Of course, in some cases a doctor may be advisable.)
“I would totally recommend anyone interested in training to attend an introductory day to find out more. The instructors will encourage and support you all the way, providing help and guidance even after qualifying. There were times when I had doubts and felt ‘I can’t do this’ but here I am, loving my new career.”
NOTE: As a nurse, Catherine already had an anatomy and physiology qualification, first aid and CPR training. This is not a necessary pre-requisite to training. Further information can be found elsewhere on the website and in our beginners’ Prospectus.
